Biography of Dr. Jens Jokisch, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in New York

Jens was born in 1970 and grew up in Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. After completing his military service and reserve officers training, Jens studied law in Passau and Toulouse, France. He holds a PhD in European Law from the University of Passau and completed his legal clerkship in Hamburg, Brussels, and Berlin.

Jens joined the Federal Foreign Office in 2001. His career has included senior positions at the Federal Foreign Office’s Headquarters in Berlin as well as diplomatic postings abroad.

After finishing the one-year attaché training period, his first posting was at the International Legal Department. He then switched to European Law, working in the Task Force on the negotiation of a European Constitution. In 2004, he joined the Cabinet of the State Secretaries as an advisor. From 2009 to 2011, Jens served as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy in Damascus, Syria. Upon his return to Berlin, he was appointed Deputy Head of Division for Fundamental and Institutional Questions of EU Policy, a position he held from 2011 to 2015. From 2015 to 2016, he led the Task Force on Refugees and Migration in the Federal Foreign Office.

From 2016 to 2019, Jens served as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. He then returned to Berlin as Head of the Crisis Response Center and Commissioner for Crisis Management of the Federal Foreign Office. In this capacity, he chaired the Crisis Task Force of the Federal Government. Following a tenure with a German think tank, the Bertelsmann Foundation, from October 2025 to August 2026, Jens assumed office as German Consul General in New York on September 1, 2026.

Jens is married with four children, three of whom are with him in New York, while his eldest studies in Europe.
